Join us at the Modern Dance Department for this semesters Performing Dance Company concert.

The program will feature works by faculty members Ellen Bromberg, Satu Hummasti, Tandy Beal, and Stephen Koester. This concert will also showcase a work by New York City dance artist Nicholas Leichter as well as Martha Graham's seminal work, Panorama, reconstructed by Kaye Richards. This eclectic concert promises to be both thought provoking and compelling.

Come Join The Fun...

Join us this weekend the 20,21, and 22nd of November for Identities In Transition. This concert will be the culmination of choreography by graduate students at the University of Utah. The program will consist of works by Ms. Monica Campbell, Mr. Juan Carlos Claudio, Ms. Corinne Cappelletti, and Ms. Emily Fifer. In this exciting evening of dance the choreographers explore themes of cultural and personal identity and mythology, the subject matter and movement contained within are as diverse and thought provoking as the choreographers themselves. Come with us and experience the work of four professional dance artists as they return to academia to explore, question and challenge topics ranging from: Notions of home and place, ideas of collapse in a post 9/11 society, and the role that relationships play in the creation of identity.

Fall PDC is upon us...

The Fall PDC concert dives into the complexities of being human, both in solitude and within our desire to connect to others. The evening is filled with complex and visceral works created by faculty members Abby Fiat and Eric Handman as well as works by guest artists Gabri Christa and Charlotee Boye-Christensen. The Fall Concert demonstrates a range of human emotion and experience. Each work presented is unique and dynamic, but they all share themes of humans trying to relate to one another and themselves.

PDC Approaches...

Performing Dance Company's Spring Concert slips into the surreal as choreographer Carly Allred examines devolution as the dancers revert to a primal state. Pamela Geber transports five women into a sexy, akward and slightly askew reality. Animation, movement and images uncover vulnerability and connection in a collaborative work by Satu Hummasti and Lien Fan Shen. Stephen Koester explores the subtle shades of language, emotion and the human connection. The reconstruction of Schubert* highlights Murray Louis's influenctial and stylized technique accompanied by alumni from the School of Musics.

Guest Artists

This fall we were pleased to welcome guest artist, Susan McLain, who visited the department to restage a work on PDC. Susan “…holds a B.A. in Dance Education and a M.F.A. from the Modern Dance Department at the University of Utah where she also served as a faculty member for eight years. Ms. McLain has taught at the Alvin Ailey School, the Martha Graham School, and various other professional studios and universities. Her choreography has been seen in the repertoire of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Repertory Dance Theater and other professional companies in the United States.” During her two-week residency Susan taught Technique, Workshop, and participated in our Brown Bag lecture series. Her piece "In the Company of Men" is being performed in the fall PDC performance.

In September we had Consultant Kim Konikow come talk our students about career development. The week of classes she taught covered some of the practical aspects of the dance profession including growing audiences for dance, the myths and realities of touring, grant writing, financial administration, raising funds creatively, and career options. While all the students benefited from her presence in the department, she specifically worked with the Freshman, Seniors and Graduate students. However, a Brown Bag lecture was held and ALL the students were able to ask questions and gain a better insight into the career. Kim came to us from a varied background in the arts as a presenter and administrator. She has worked as a consultant for Artservices and Company for over 25 years, and has worked administratively in New York, Arizona, Utah, and Minnesota. Thank you, Kim, for sharing your knowledge with us!

Other guest artists this fall semester are Gladys Bailin, Professor Emeritus from Ohio State and original member of the Murray Louis Dance Company and Millicent Johnne resident choreographer for Urban Bush Women. Youssouf Kombassa also made a master class appearance.

The audition for Spring PDC will take place shortly after this semester's PDC performance. Stay tuned for the date and time...
